Outside Inside
© Rachel Hoffman-Bayles
Painted 2001-2002, and printed in 2004, this card takes its inside and outside text from the traditional French carol "Cantique de Noel," or "O Holy Night," based on a poem written by Placide Cappeau. This image is full of symbols of Christ: the bread and wine; water; a shepherd and a lamb; the light in darkness; sacks of grain and the manger, representing the source of spiritual nourishment; stone; and the colors of royalty: red and purple. There is also a hammer and rope, and beams of wood, reminding us of his death on the cross.
